Tokyo, Japan, January 14 2014—Lexus unveiled the RC F, the high performance version of its new RC performance coupe, today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the United States. The RC F's styling highlights the vehicle's optimum high-speed stability.
The Lexus RC F is the most powerful Lexus V8 yet, with engine power exceeding 450 hp and torque exceeding 520 Nm. To deliver this power efficiently, the RC F will be the world's first front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car to make use of a Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD) for guaranteed levels of extraordinary handling and performance. Power will be transferred through a newly calibrated eight-speed transmission.
"I built the RC F to be enjoyed by all enthusiasts, no matter their level of expertise", said Chief Engineer Yukihiko Yaguchi. "The RC F's electronics can be modified instantly on board to provide appropriate levels of performance and protection. But, even at its basic setting, it's a blast."
The RC F will use an all-new 5.0-liter 32-valve engine that provides increased maximum power at higher engine revolutions than previously possible. For the first time in a Lexus performance engine, the RC F uses the Atkinson cycle at cruising speeds for enhanced fuel economy and the Otto cycle at higher speeds for impressive performance.
Driver engagement has been improved through purpose designed sound and power delivery channels. A uniquely tuned eight-speed Sports Direct Shift (SPDS) transmission improves linear response to accelerator-pedal operation, letting the driver feel more immersed in the torque and power as it is applied. A system of regulating induction and exhaust sounds helps create a deep tone up to 3,000 rpm, and a higher-pitched tone as revolutions rise above 6,000 rpm.
The newly calibrated VDIM adds a vertical G-sensor for greater vehicle stability.
Torque Vectoring Differential
The Lexus RC F uses the Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD), a world first for a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicle, for heightened driving enjoyment. It has three operating modes:
Standard: For a balance between nimble performance and stability
Slalom: For emphasis on nimble steering response
Track: For consistent, stable behavior, ensuring the vehicle stays on the intended cornering line as the driver accelerates
As in the Lexus LFA supercar, an active rear wing is incorporated into the trunk lid to provide down force at speeds of more than 80 km/hr. The wing is a highlight of the RC F's aerodynamic grip and stability package which also includes careful tuning of the flat underbody, the ducts at the rear of the front bumper and front fenders, and strategic placement of aero-stabilizing fins.
The foundation for the vehicle's mechanical grip is the high rigidity of the body, which also includes large cross-section rocker panels and a highly rigid front lower brace, as well as specialized Lexus manufacturing techniques such as body adhesives, laser-screw welding and multi-spot welding. Grip is further enhanced through use of a wider tire and wheel assembly.
The RC F has coil-spring independent suspensions in the front and rear, with monotube gas shock absorbers and ball-jointed stabilizer bars. Unsprung weight is enhanced by the adoption of three grades of new 19-inch diameter forged aluminum wheels that minimize tire/wheel assembly mass and maximize rigidity.
The RC F stands out for the visual aggression added to the stylish body of the new RC coupe. It features an exclusive version of the Lexus signature spindle grille that dominates the front of the vehicle, with an "F" motif embedded in its mesh from below the Lexus symbol. Meanwhile, the unique high hood continues the aggressive look and also produces a powerful side view.
The RC F takes design cues from the Lexus LFA supercar, especially in essential air cooling and aerodynamics. The hood air outlets, like those on the LFA, combine with front cooling ducts to contribute to engine cooling and overall vehicle stability.
To the side, L-shaped front quarter ducts also aid cooling performance while adding to the aggressive stance.
Uniquely designed components, including instrument gauges, steering wheel, seats, ornamentation and pedals, convey a sense of connection with the driver that only a Lexus F model can achieve.
Instrument Panel (F-model exclusive)
The RC F's all-new instrument panel is further evolved from the LFA while also referencing aircraft cockpit instruments by providing a wide range of information in an easily understood form tailored to each driving mode.
Included in the RC F's instrument package is a large centrally mounted tachometer that alters by driving mode, a digital and analog speedometer, a Differential Torque Vectoring monitor, G-force meter, oil and water temperature gauges, odometer and a stopwatch.
The connection between driver and vehicle is paramount in the RC F, which features a Lexus first elliptical cross-section thick grip steering wheel for greater control during performance driving. The placement, shape and operation of the paddle shifters in particular make it easier to initiate gear changes during track driving and other high performance circumstances.
The all-new high back seats of the RC F have been designed to resemble the look of form-fitting athletic sportswear to support and cosset occupants. Manufactured through an integrated foaming technique, the seats are highly supportive and taut-fitting and do not suffer from movement of the trim material.
The RC F employs a comprehensive package of carbon fiber parts drawn from experience with the LFA and with the limited edition race car, the IS F CCS-R. The carbon package includes the roof, engine hood and the active rear wing.
