Toyota Publishes "Environmental & Social Report 2003"
—Yearly Reports Now Looks at Social, Economic Aspects of Toyota Initiatives—


Tokyo—TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) today announced that it has issued its "Environmental & Social Report 2003," summarizing the results of TMC environmental, social and economic initiatives undertaken in FY2002.

TMC conducts its business activities with environmental initiatives positioned as a top-priority management issue, and has been issuing environmental reports since FY1998 in order to enhance the disclosure of information.

In addition to a detailed look at TMC's activities in the field of environmental preservation, the scope of information in this year's report has been expanded—with the aim of disclosing information related to all of TMC's initiatives that contribute to sustainable development—to include a section on the social and economic aspects of TMC's approach to doing business.  This new section describes TMC's relationships with its main stakeholders, including customers, society, business partners, employees and shareholders.

Environmental aspects of TMC's approach
  1. Environmental Management
    • In FY2002, total environmental costs were 166.3 billion yen, an increase of 32.4 billion yen from the previous fiscal year accounting for 1.9% of net sales, while actual economic effects were 4.3 billion yen.
  2. Development and Design
    • Six vehicle weight categories achieved the 2010 Fuel Efficiency Standards for gasoline-powered passenger vehicles, bringing the number of vehicles meeting the standards to 75% of total production.
    • TMC increased the introduction of models that meet the Japanese government's Approval System for Low-Emission Vehicles, with such vehicles now accounting for 98% of production.
    • TMC increased the number of passenger models fitted with a hybrid system (cumulative sales worldwide exceed 140,000 units).
    • TMC began limited marketing of a fuel cell hybrid vehicle, the TOYOTA FCHV (four units in Japanand two in the United States).
  3. Procurement and Production
    • TMC requested related suppliers to respond to the EU ELV directive (prohibiting the use of hexavalent chromium and other regulated substances).
    • TMC reduced CO2 emissions during its production process to 1.61 million tons-CO2(reduction of 20,000 tons from the previous year) and combustible waste to one-third from FY1990 levels.
  4. Recycling
    • TMC established the Toyota Recycle Vision, which sets long-term goals for automobile recycling.
    • TMC began incorporating the results of research by the Automobile Recycle Technical Center into vehicles that adopt design for recyclability (DFR)
  5. Consolidated Environmental Management
    • Total CO2 emissions during production processes of consolidated companies worldwide were 880kg/vehicle and volume of waste generated was 14kg/vehicle, a reduction from the previous year of 30kg/vehicle and 5kg/vehicle, respectively.

  2. Society:  Thinking and initiatives concerning traffic safety campaigns, philanthropic activities and dialog with stakeholders

  4. Employees: Thinking and initiatives concerning labor-management relations, human resources development, diversity and equal opportunity, etc.
